The University of California, Berkeley, the nation’s premier public research university, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the UC Berkeley Walter A. Haas School of Business (Berkeley-Haas). The University seeks a broad and diverse pool of candidates in keeping with its commitment to equity and inclusion. Berkeley-Haas, the highest ranked public business school in the country, espouses four defining leadership principles that shape students into innovative leaders: Question the Status Quo, Confidence without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself. The next Dean must embrace and emanate these defining leadership principles and broadcast them widely, while working to elevate Berkeley-Haas to new levels of excellence and establishing it as the most distinguished-by-culture business school in the world. Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, the Dean is the chief academic and executive officer of Berkeley-Haas and oversees all areas of its operation.

Founded in 1898 as the first U.S. business school at a public university, Berkeley-Haas is one of the world’s leading producers of new ideas and knowledge in all areas of business. With a world-class ladder-rank faculty of 93, along with 145 professional faculty members, Berkeley-Haas boasts two Nobel prizes, six American Academy of Arts and Sciences members, and many prominent alumni, including Professor Emerita Janet Yellen, Chair of the Federal Reserve. Today, the School enrolls about 2,200 students across six degree programs and its 39,000 living alumni serve in leadership roles across 94 different countries.

The next dean of Berkeley-Haas will take the reins after two decades of rapid growth following the opening of the modern Haas campus in 1995. A set of increasingly valuable advantages relative to its peers – e.g., proximity to San Francisco and Silicon Valley, a distinguished faculty, a commitment to social impact, and a strong culture – are well understood by the larger Haas community and frame aspirations for the School at the highest level. The next Dean, working closely with various stakeholders, will have the capacity to set new directions, based on Berkeley-Haas’s many strengths, and will inspire action from the School and University, as well as among alumni, the business community, and other constituencies.

The next Dean of Berkeley-Haas will address a number of key opportunities and challenges, including: 1) Continue to execute an inspiring vision for the future of Berkeley-Haas; 2) Ensure that an appropriate resource base is achieved to fulfill the vision and ambitions of the Berkeley-Haas community; 3) Hire and help develop new faculty and staff, and provide support for existing personnel; 4) Work collaboratively to reenergize the curriculum with an eye towards program development; 5) Continue to prioritize, embrace, and promote diversity and inclusion; 6) Be a powerful and effective external advocate locally, nationally, and globally; and 7) Further capitalize on the unique resources across UC Berkeley. This is an opportunity to lead the top-ranked public business school, one with a deep commitment to developing leaders who redefine how people do business; in doing so, the Dean will have the chance to make a social impact locally, nationally, and globally.
