Part-Time Lecturer in Real Estate Finance Real Estate Development Design

Part-Time Lecturer in Real Estate Finance - Real Estate Development + Design

The Real Estate Development + Design program at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a part-time lecturer to teach real estate finance with an expected start date of May 1, 2021.

The selected candidate will develop and teach a new course in the applications of real estate finance to real estate development (RDEV 225). RDEV 225 is designed to facilitate a mastery of core finance and valuation skills required of real estate developers through a practical approach using real world examples / case studies. It is designed to develop students' ability to think critically about how real estate value is created and develop analytical tools used to derive it. The primary emphasis in the course is on the acquisition, development, financing, and repositioning of real estate projects.

General Duties
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus, lectures), maintaining a course website via UC's learning management system (e.g. bCourses). It is expected they attend at least one meeting per semester with teaching colleagues.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or higher in a relevant field - including real estate development, business administration, finance, urban planning, law, and other related fields and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Broad understanding of the real estate industry
  • Specialized knowledge in business & finance fundamentals, financial modeling, real estate finance, real estate capital markets, and/or applications of real estate finance to real estate development projects
  • Graduate teaching experience

Knowledge of the following area are preferred: Cap Rate Analysis, Comparable Analysis, Discounted Cash Flow, Permanent Loans, Commercial Mortgage Backed Securities, Construction Loans and Guarantees, Mezzanine Loans, Preferred Equity, Joint Venture, Private Equity, Core Funds, Sovereign Wealth Funds, Site Acquisition, Options, Ground Leases, REITs, and Crowd-Funding.

Salary is commensurate with education experience. UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.

About the Master in Real Estate Development + Design (MRED+D)
The Nancy and Douglas Abbey MRED+D program is a different kind of real estate development program, providing students with strong fundamentals in real estate finance, economics, market analysis, land use, construction, and public-private partnerships, but built around three core pillars of sustainability, social equity, and design. We are training the next generation of socially-conscious and community-oriented developers to be a part of the solution to the grand challenges of our time -- climate change, COVID-19, racial injustice, rising inequality, the affordable housing crisis, and more. Our students come from backgrounds in business, architecture, urban planning, engineering, law, among others, and typically bring 5+ years of work experience. MRED+D is a 3-term, 11-month intensive program with an estimated 2021/22 enrollment of 40-45. See
