POSITION TITLE: DEAN, COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS
Academic Career & Executive Search is pleased to assist North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) in their search for an accomplished and innovative leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Business and Economics.
This is a remarkable opportunity to join a university experiencing record growth, increased retention rates and enrollment of its most academically accomplished first-year class. For the fourth straight year enrollment has grown rising 6.3% this past fall, retention increased 3.5% along with a nearly 13% increase in transfer students.
The College of Business and Economics is an integral part of the University’s strategic plan, and the new Dean can help accomplish the College’s and the University’s strategic goals.
The position is ideal for an innovative, cutting edge, strategic leader with a proven history of successful growth initiatives, strong partnership and collaboration skills, and results focused leadership. The successful candidate will coordinate the development and delivery of high quality academic programs within the College of Business continuing to advance the College’s role, stature and impact in business and management education and in scholarly and funded research. The Dean must be student focused and committed to student success.
This unique opportunity is available to either a proven Senior Academic Leader or a highly accomplished C-Suite Business Leader. The successful candidate must have a proven record of academic and/or professional achievements, commensurate with appointment at the rank of Full Professor in the College of Business and Economics.
The position reports to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and, as a member of the Deans Council, works closely with other deans and members of the Academic Affairs staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Dean will be responsible for continuing to advance and strengthen degree programs; foster excellence in research, teaching and engagement; promote local, regional, national and global visibility; continue the advancement of innovation and entrepreneurship; increase the College’s financial resources; and effectively manage the College’s budget. The Dean will supervise program assessments, as well as work collaboratively with others in implementing and updating the long-range strategic vision and plan for the College.
The Dean will also work closely with local, regional and national business leaders and collaboratively with the University’s Office of Advancement, to build a substantial endowment to fund new initiatives and enhance the College’s future.
The candidate should meet one of the two following sets of criteria:
Senior Academic Leader
• PhD in a business-related discipline from an AACSB International accredited institution,
• Qualifications appropriate for an appointment to the faculty as a tenured full professor,
• Significant senior leadership and administrative experience, in addition to academic service, and
• Demonstrated success in community/professional engagements across a wide-array of organizations.
Senior Business Professional Leader
• Advanced degree in business or related field,
• Experience as the chief executive officer, president, or similarly ranked senior management position,
• Significant accomplishments, both within the business sector and in the community, and
• Experience working with universities or other business Colleges as a corporate volunteer, trustee, advisor or other volunteer roles.
• Demonstrated excellence in leadership
• Experience in selecting, evaluating, promoting and retaining high quality faculty and staff
• Ability and willingness to obtain significant external funding
• Demonstrated understanding of the need for active student recruitment and retention
• Clear understanding of the importance of and process for maintaining AACSB International accreditation
• Ability to foster strong working relationships with academic, alumni, business, and other stakeholders
• Proven history of strategic relationship with councils, committees, and organizations to strengthen ties with the community and enhance the college and programs

Academics and Research. One of the 17 campuses in the University of North Carolina system, N.C. A&T is a high research activity, doctorate-granting university, with 11,877 students in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; College of Business and Economics, College of Education; College of Engineering; College of Health and Human Sciences, College of Science and Technology, and the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, which is in collaboration with The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The University offers 55 undergraduate degrees, 29 master’s degrees and 9 PhD programs. For the fiscal year 2016-2017, N.C. A&T generated more than $62 million in sponsored programs and more than $6 million in appropriations for agricultural research and cooperative extension.
The College of Business and Economics
The College of Business and Economics at North Carolina A&T State University has proudly maintained accreditation by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International) since 1979. The Accounting accreditation has been in place since 1986. The most recent reaffirmation of accreditation occurred in fall 2016.
The administrative structure of the College of Business and Economics is designed to implement its Vision and Mission through the efficient use of the available human, financial and physical resources. Direction and support are provided by the Dean, Associate Dean, five academic Chairpersons, the Director of Student Services, the Director of Graduate Programs, the Director of the Transportation Institute, 14 administrative services staff and 1 technical services staff.
A faculty of over 75 (70 tenure-track) teach in the Departments of Accounting and Finance; Business and Education; Economics; Management; and Marketing, Transportation and Supply Chain. Faculty members are tasked with providing high quality teaching and learning supported by relevant scholarly and funded research and service to the institution, the professions and the community.
The student body consists of approximately 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduate degrees are awarded in Accounting, Finance, Business Education, Economics, Management, Marketing, and Supply Chain Management. The graduate degree offered is the MBA. A request has been submitted to establish Master of Accounting (MAcc.), with a likely start date of spring or fall 2019.
The learning environment in the College of Business and Economics is enhanced by modern classrooms, equipped with state-of-the-art classroom technology; teaching and general purpose computer labs, a collaborative learning space, a reading room, and the Financial Trading Room.
