This position will manage the structure and implementation of the new Center for Healthcare Marketplace Innovation (CHMI) at UC Berkeley. The CHMI is a cross-disciplinary research-focused center that aims to revolutionize healthcare innovation. The center's focus is on research that is at the frontier of business innovation AI, data, and medicine and is charged with enabling novel approaches. This includes fields such as medicine, biology, data science, economics, and business. The mission is to support scholarship combining the highest standards of research with insights drawn from a number of fields. CHMI's cross-disciplinary approach promotes the broad application of these principles in healthcare marketplace innovation. The center aims to ensure that Berkeley will continue to attract and train the most talented scholars in this important field of study.

Responsibilities

The executive director for the Center for Healthcare Market Innovation will play a leading role in launching and growing a new research center at the Haas School of Business. The position will work with the faculty director and other stakeholders to develop and execute on strategy, as well as play the lead role in managing events; relations with faculty, students, post-doctoral scholars, and other stakeholders; communications; fundraising; and general operations and administration.

Directs and administers an independent academic or research program with complete responsibility for administrative and programmatic activities including assisting with the design and development of the research.

  • Conducts and leads research activities, including data analysis, project design, stakeholder management, and similar duties.


Creates research collaborations between multiple departments and disciplines, including data science, medicine, business, economics, and others.

Work with faculty director on policy recommendations at local, state, national, and international/NGO levels.

Advise faculty director and affiliated faculty on research opportunities and contribute to translational research approaches.

Has primary responsibility for operational administration for all research, events, programs, and other initiatives.

  • Builds funding mechanisms to support the sustainable development of the Center.


Identifies and pursues funding opportunities and revenue streams.

  • Pursues opportunities to expand initial funding provided by donors.
  • Creates revenue opportunities, such as conference sponsorships, grants, sponsored research projects, and gifts.


Participates in advanced program budgeting and accounting processes to support a self-supporting/sustaining financial infrastructure for program.

  • Works with department financial manager and faculty directors to set annual budget.
  • Reviews quarterly financial reports to ensure the Center is staying within its budget and achieving financial goals.


Assesses program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly.

  • Develops and measures KPIs to assess the center's effectiveness.
  • Works with faculty director(s) to assess research and programmatic initiatives to adjust to meet stakeholders' needs.


Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short- and long-term planning.

  • Represents the program at institute-, school- level, and university-level meetings.
  • Works with faculty director(s) to plan and institute quarterly, annual, and longer-term plans for programs and initiatives.


Facilitates the efforts of various departments, managers, and outside constituencies to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Develops networks of faculty and other partner stakeholders who will support and participate in the center's research.
  • Works directly with other departments, centers, and programs within Haas, UC Berkeley, and the UC system at large.
  • Manages collaborations with academics, companies, government entities, and more.


Organized conferences, workshops, and seminars focused on disseminating behavioral economics and finance research and building connections between research from multiple disciplines.

Manages financial and HR resources.

  • Leads the process of hiring other staff for the Center.
  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of other operational staff.
  • Coordinates contracting, purchasing, hiring of vendors, and similar tasks.


Participates in professional conferences, and provides public relations support

  • Develops and executes on communications strategies and plans.
  • Organizes and leads planning for center events, such as conferences and meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and deadlines, as well as to coordinate with faculty director(s) and their schedules and priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating a desire to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to establish and maintain positive & professional working relationships with colleagues, students and team members.

Education/Training:

  • Advanced degree in economics, business, data science, health care, or related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with launching new programs, centers, or initiatives, particularly in an academic environment. An entrepreneurial mindset to create new opportunities.


Salary & Benefits

This is a 1yr, 50% part-time (20 hours/week), contract appointment, eligible for UC benefits with the possibility of extension with continued funding. This is a monthly paid, exempt position.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $120,000.00 - $153,100.00, rate displayed at 100% FTE.
