Aalto University School of Engineering invites applications for
Assistant Professor in Real Estate Economics (tenure track)
The Real Estate Research Group
is part of the Department of Built Environment
, in the School of Engineering. We are nine professors and around 20 researchers (PhD candidates and postdocs) from all topic areas of Real Estate, including i.a. economics, finance, management, law, land management, business models and future studies. We provide real estate -related education in the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels.
The commercial property markets are facing dramatical changes as almost all major property types (offices, retail, logistics, residential) are in the state of transformation due to the urbanization, sustainable transition, new ways of working, and digitalization. These transformations have profound effects for the owners of the assets through impacts on e.g. the dynamics of demand and supply, as well as the contract structures and business models between actors, which there forth have consequences on the risks and values of these assets. As commercial real estate provides the physical locations for firms, individuals and public services to operate, and form a notable share of institutional (e.g., pension fund) portfolios and loan portfolios of banks, the need for theoretically justified and evidence-based research to support the transitions and protect the society from broader systemic risks is evident.
We are seeking for an ambitious and enthusiastic Assistant Professor (tenure track) to strengthen the profile of Real Estate Economics Research Group in the area of commercial real estate. The focus on commercial real estate is defined broadly, and you can be specialized in e.g., investments, dynamics of commercial real estate markets (broadly or within a segment), real estate valuation, development and management of assets, or emerging digital management and business models. We seek for candidates focusing on the commercial and financial aspects of real estate, and not e.g. on the technical or project management aspects.
Requirements and evaluation process
You have a doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g., Real Estate, Economics, Finance, Management), or will be finishing one by the post start date. Candidates who have completed their doctoral studies some time prior to the time of application should be able to demonstrate that they have started to develop a novel and independent research agenda.
You have a track record, or potential to publish your research in high-ranking refereed international journals, and a well expressed and viable strategy for future research that has potential to lead to high impact research and top publications. You show potential to be able to acquire external research funding from Finnish and international sources, and regarding societal impact of research and education.
You will be expected to work as part of a team in delivering the teaching programmes offered by our unit, particularly the Master’s Programme in Real Estate Economics (taught in English), and in different tasks in our Bachelor's and Doctoral programmes. You are expected to have the ability to teach particularly commercial real estate related topics, but also to be prepared to gain expertise in the topics more broadly, when necessary.
The position is a tenure track position and will be filled to the assistant professor levels. Evaluation at the assistant professor level is mainly based on research merits, as well as the applicant’s potential to develop into a world-class academic. In all levels of the tenure track system, a professor is expected to perform high-quality research and teaching at doctoral, master’s and bachelor levels, to be an active member of the international scientific community, and to exhibit academic leadership. Advancements in the tenure track are based on scheduled performance assessments, which take into account the candidate’s merits in all these areas.
