The Department of Mathematics is one of the largest teaching departments within the College of Letters and Science with annual enrollments of over 20,000 students including summer session. The department employs approximately 52 ladder-rank faculty, 30 emeriti faculty and 30 visiting teaching faculty and special research visitors, 15.5 career staff, 300 Graduate Student Instructors, 110 Readers, and 3 Work Study employees each year. The Department has approximately 200 graduate students and 1000 undergraduate majors.
- Working with a high degree of independence, advises department on complex curricular issues and recommends courses of action when new courses, programs are introduced. Determines courses to be offered each term based upon major requirements and graduate degrees, enrollment trends, and faculty availability. Assumes direct responsibility for scheduling classrooms for all undergraduate and graduate lectures and discussion sections each term, including the Department's large Summer Sessions program.
- Make adjustments to class sizes and numbers of discussion sections. Devises solutions to classroom space and scheduling problems, taking into account the curriculum needs of students, the needs of faculty, and available options, and makes room change requests as needed. Make room change request as needed. Schedule departmental courses such as MATH 49, MATH 98/198, MATH 99/199, etc. Partner with Student Learning Center to schedule adjunct courses.
- Projects future course planning based upon faculty availability, taking into account sabbaticals, fellowships and grants, internal and external administrative assignments, and courses taught in other departments and / or other universities. Participates in the annual TAS Budget Call process.
- Ensure that all instructors have correct access for viewing rosters and grading. Tracks faculty teaching points and provides teaching point balances to Chair and Scheduling Committee Chair for use in faculty teaching assignments.
- Provide enrollment support for students. Field in-person, telephone and email inquiries. Process waiting lists, negotiate course enrollment limits with instructors, set up process to collect undergraduate applications for Mathematics graduate courses, ensuring fairness among eligible candidates and appropriate qualifications for a course, and enter enrollment exceptions where appropriate. Manage concurrent enrollment applications, taking into account the space available in classrooms, course enrollment limits, and instructor feedback.
- Manages the Math Department's Peer Advising Program in consultation with department major advisors. Recruits and trains new peer advisors, helps peer advisors plan events and info sessions to benefit students and runs the weekly peer advising meetings.
- Utilizing extensive knowledge of course content, facilitates new course approval and curriculum revisions through interaction with the Coordination of College Policy, Academic Senate, or similar organization. Tracks data about undergraduate student outcomes and makes recommendations for, the improvement of the major programs in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Mathematics with a Concentration in Teaching.
- Along with Major advisors, monitor and manage the department's piazza account and peer advising board, as well as other student/instruction/course related communication tools.
- Coordinate textbook selection and ordering with Calculus and Course Committee, as well as with individual upper-division and graduate course instructors.
- Serves as departmental liaison with publishers and coordinates desk copy distribution and collection.
- Participates in campus advising and curriculum committees, professional development opportunities, and other duties as assigned. Participates in professional student services committees that develop policies / procedures with nationwide impact.
- Provides critical support to high profile student events including, but not limited to, commencement.

- Thorough knowledge of, or can learn, common University-specific computer application programs. Proficiency with MAC desktop applications for word processing and data management. Familiarity with Course Management System, Campus Solutions, and Cal Central and/or equivalent systems.
- Thorough knowledge of, or can learn, department, organization, and University policies, procedures, and directives.
- Thorough knowledge of, or can learn, department and school / college general and major course and degree requirements.
- Knowledge of, or can learn, campus policies and procedures pertaining to undergraduate education, curriculum, confidentiality (FERPA) and related areas.
Salary & Benefits
Annual salary will be commensurate with experience within the range of $74,000 - $84,000.
