Teaching & Research – Innovation in Hospitality or Services Management

Position Summary:

The Howard Feiertag Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) in the Pamplin College of Business, Virginia Tech, invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Innovation in Hospitality or Services Management at our Blacksburg, VA campus to begin August 2020. Must have completed all requirements for a PhD in Hospitality and Tourism Management or a related field by time of appointment. Applications will be reviewed on the basis of the candidate’s potential for and record of research and teaching excellence in innovation in hospitality or services management and related areas, and ability to work effectively in a collegial environment. The successful candidate will be required to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the HTM program, particularly in the area of lodging. Occasional travel to attend professional conferences and meetings will also be required.

This position is part of a major effort of HTM to strengthen our research and teaching at the interface of hospitality management and technology. Virginia Tech is uniquely positioned as a leading computer science and information technology hub, exemplified most recently through a billion-dollar investment into a new campus in conjunction with Amazon’s second headquarters (HQ2) set to be built in Arlington, Virginia. The department has excellent relationships with computer science faculty as well.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Teach Undergraduate, Masters, and Ph.D. courses offered by the Feiertag HTM Department as required by the Department and College; to pursue a program of research excellence in hospitality or services innovation, leading to publication in major academic journals in Hospitality and Tourism Management; to advise undergraduate and graduate students; to contribute in meaningful ways to the inclusion and diversity goals of the Department, College, and University; and to serve on Department, College, and University committees as well as professional and outreach activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s interests and rank.

Required Qualifications:

All requirements for a PhD in Hospitality and Tourism Management or related field by time of appointment. However, candidates who will have completed all requirements for the PhD within one academic semester of appointment may be considered.

  • Ability to work effectively in a collegial environment.
  • Professional experience in hospitality or services management.
  • Demonstrated scholarly excellence in innovation in hospitality or services management, specifically technology-related innovation.
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence in hospitality or services management, specifically lodging management.
  • The ability to travel internationally for meetings and conferences.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated passion for working with students of diverse backgrounds and helping them achieve their educational and professional goals.

Howard Feiertag Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management
The Howard Feiertag HTM Department is one of six Departments in the Pamplin College of Business. The Feiertag HTM Department is ranked as one of the premier programs in the nation. The Department offers a BS in Business with a major in Hospitality and Tourism Management, and an MSBA and a Ph.D. in Business with concentration in Hospitality and Tourism Management. Currently, there are approximately 225 undergraduate, 30 master, and 15 Ph.D. students in the program. The Blacksburg Area
