Job Description: 

The successful candidate will explore centrosome functions, using cell biology, molecular genetic and biochemical analyses to test the mechanisms that act at the centriole distal end and that control centrosome numerical homeostasis. The successful candidate for this position should be curiosity-driven, creative, and passionate about science. A high degree of self-motivation and independence is important, as well as the ability to communicate well within an international, multidisciplinary team. 

Duties:   

  • Conduct a specified programme of research and scholarship on centrosomes/centrioles/cilia under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator. 
  • Perform tissue culture, fluorescence microscopy, molecular cloning and cell biology analyses and related techniques using appropriate technologies. 
  • Keep up to date with research related methods and techniques. 
  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the biology of centrosomes, cilia and DNA damage responses. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage a research project including the accurate and timely recording of data, presentation and discussion of findings, co-supervision of students. 
  • Contribute to the research project’s dissemination - reports, papers, chapters, book contributions, etc. 
  • Mentor and collaborate with graduate research students, as appropriate and as directed. 
  • May participate in limited teaching hours for career development.  The extent of this must not adversely impact the primary research role.

Qualifications/Skills required:  

Essential Requirements:  

  • PhD in cell/ molecular biology, biochemistry or related area. 
  • Demonstrable experience in mammalian cell culture and gene targeting/ genome editing. 
  • Demonstrable research experience in microscopy (fluorescence and/ or electron). 
  • Demonstrable research experience in molecular biology. 

Desirable Requirements:  

  • Experience in student project supervision. 
  • First author published/accepted research paper(s) in international peer-reviewed scientific literature. 
  • Specific research experience and expertise in centrosome and/ or ciliary biology.

This post is available immediately for 2.5 years initially, with the possibility of extension, subject to research funding availability.  

The HRB Clinical Research Facility Galway (CRFG) provides the infrastructure, physical space, facilities, expertise and culture needed to support bioscience and medical research. We focus on studies aimed at understanding a range of diseases and translating this knowledge into regulatory approved advances in patient care. Research nurses work with multidisciplinary teams to improve our understanding of a variety of diseases and to develop new tests and treatments to help tackle these diseases. The CRFG aims to provide research participants and patients with the latest advances in areas such as Cancer, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Endocrinology, Neurovascular Disease, Critical care, Cardiovascular Disease, Psychiatry, Gastroenterology, Renal Disease, Radiation Oncology, Dermatology and Respiratory Illness. Research undertaken may be interventional (e.g. novel drugs, medical devices) or non-interventional (e.g. registries) and work will be assigned based on the existing and arising needs of the CRFG research programme.  

Job Description: 

The successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team who engage with research personnel, interdisciplinary teams and clinicians to support clinical research activities in the CRFG, assisting with the planning, implementation and coordination of clinical research studies. 

The purpose of the role is to ensure that the conduct of clinical research studies within the CRFG is in compliance with the currently approved protocol/amendment(s), ensuring adherence to CRFG standard operating procedures (SOP’s), applicable regulations, and the principles of Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP).  

The research nurses will work under the direction of Principal Investigators (PI) and with a highly qualified team to initiate, screen, recruit, adhere to study and institutional protocols, undertake clinical assessments, manage research data and documentation and support the close out of clinical studies conducted within the CRFG.   

Duties: 

  • Adhere to CRFG SOPs and associated processes for clinical research projects.  
  • Adhere to nursing procedures within the CRFG and hospital. 
  • Support the setup of clinical research studies in line with CRFG and institutional processes 
  • Plan and conduct clinical research activities to ensure the smooth operation of each  

Study within the CRFG in compliance with the study protocol, ICH-GCP and applicable regulations. 

  • Participate in the education process of research participants about their disease, clinical research participation plans, gold standard treatment options and outcomes.  
  • Ensure participants are informed of all details pertaining to the clinical study/research project prior to their recruitment. 
  • Screen and contribute to obtaining fully informed consent from participants enrolling into CRFG studies.  
  • Help to meet study specific target recruitment projections as agreed by sponsor and PI. 
  • Contribute to the collation of metrics for activities undertaken at the CRFG. 
  • Ensure participant confidentiality and dignity is maintained at all times during all study related activities.  
  • Upkeep of the individual research documentation including site files, case report forms, monitoring arrangements, data correction documentation etc. as they pertain to the CRFG and Study.  
  • Provide nursing knowledge, expertise, and care to participants participating in study protocols and to nursing and other health care professional colleagues. 
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team to evaluate and treat clinical issues in line with research protocols.  
  • Facilitate the ongoing education of multi-disciplinary teams with respect to ICH-GCP, specific  

study Protocol, and research requirements.  

  • Ensure continuity of participant and patient care by liaising with outside health professionals and those who are involved with patient clinical care.  
  • Utilise agreed protocols to deal with referrals and enquiries from other departments/ hospitals/ CRFs. 
  • Promote a safe clinical environment for research participants, patients, visitors and staff of the CRFG.  
  • Undertaking further education as appropriate to the role.  
  • Attend investigator meetings (national and international) and educational conferences where applicable

Qualifications/Skills required:   

Essential Requirements: 

  • Successfully completed degree level or equivalent nursing education  
  • Current registration with an appropriate division of An Bord Altranais  
  • Have a minimum of 4 years working as a qualified nurse

The positions are funded by the EPA Ireland and are available for two years from June 2024 with possible extension after the initial term.

The positions will be to join the Centre for Climate and Air Pollution Studies (C-CAPS) Aerosol Mass Spectrometry Unit, led by Prof. Jurgita Ovadnevaite, and to facilitate ambient and laboratory aerosol mass spectrometry (AMS) measurements and source apportionment with the research focus on understanding of particulate matter composition and sources that are crucial in mitigating the aerosol impacts on health.

Atmospheric Composition, influencing both air pollution and climate change, has had a 60-year profile in C-CAPS research history (universityofgalway.ie/c-caps/) with Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station being one of the most recognized and respected facilities both nationally and internationally. It has >1,000 publications associated with it, leading to >3,000 citations per year, and an h-index of >92. The facility continues to grow in national and international importance, breaking new ground, not only in terms of operational monitoring of new pollutants in the atmosphere and delivery of real-time in-situ and remote sensing data but also in terms of fundamental research with the highest impact. The current AMS network in Ireland, led by C-CAPS, consists of the Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station and 3 additional sites strategically situated in urban (Dublin), regional background (Carnsore Point) and west coast (Valentia). The research will also involve international collaborations across Europe, the USA, Australia, and China with our long-established partners in the fields of atmospheric composition, climate, and health. 

Job Description:

The successful candidates will work with state-of-the-art chemical speciation instrumentation, including an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) and aerosol physical properties instrumentation to identify and quantify sources of particulate matter (PM) affecting air quality in Irish towns; will perform laboratory solid fuel burning experiments and will further develop and oversee the operational deployment of the Aerosol Mass Spectrometry, greenhouse gas and short-lived climate forcer (SLCF) network. Provide recommendations on actions to reduce PM2.5 levels and achieve alignment with the recast of the CAFE Directive and the new WHO air quality guidelines issued in 2021.

Duties:

  • To undertake atmospheric composition measurements at a number of remote monitoring stations around Ireland.
  • To perform long-term source apportionment for Irish sites.
  • To plan and conduct short term laboratory and field experiments related to source characterisation and identification of aerosol composition- health relationships.
  • To develop and implement quality assurance measures.
  • Work with other team members to plan project activities and set key milestones.
  • Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support as appropriate.
  • Keep up to date with research related methods and techniques, in particular AMS spectrometry and source apportionment.
  • To complete the administrative work to support the programme of research.
  • To assist in the financial management of the project.
  • Manage research resources, i.e. laboratories and equipment appropriately.
  • Presenting findings at international conferences, leading peer-reviewed publications and leading/contributing to proposal and project report writing.
  • Liaise with the network coordinator, stakeholders in the State and internationally as well as research groups to ensure strong links with ACTRIS and ACSM/AMS community.
  • The role will involve international collaborations across Europe, the USA, and China with our long-established partners in the fields of atmospheric composition, climate, and health.
  • Write up results from own research activity.
  • Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research with the support and under the supervision of the principal Investigator by publishing reports.

This group’s aim is to foster new collaborative research, in particular on problems that arise through the application of cutting-edge mathematical and statistical modelling techniques. Job Description: 

Supported by the SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, the University of Galway wishes to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher to join this exciting project bringing together industry partners, and clinical and data science researchers within the University of Galway.  

Cardiovascular medical device innovation is a prolific development area. A major challenge is how to devise the most effective use of devices to optimally benefit the patient while minimizing harm. Endotronix have developed a sensor which is implanted in patients to collect real time readings of the pulmonary artery waveforms. The implant is minimally invasive and allows for longitudinal assessment of patients through 20 second daily readings of heart dynamics. The project goal is to develop an algorithm for estimating cardiac output (CO) using features derived from pulmonary artery pressure waveforms and correlating it to thermodilution measured cardiac output. CO is the amount of blood pumped by the heart every minute and is the mechanism whereby blood flows around the body. CO is difficult to measure non-invasively, so the goal is to estimate the CO using the Endotronix sensor alone, thereby reducing invasiveness while maintaining accuracy.  

Dr. Simpkin’s research group at Galway has a history of developing and deploying models for such rich, multivariate sensor data and other data in applications from genetics to cancer to sports science and engineering. This project will develop and apply solutions for the multivariate data generated by the Endotronix sensor. The Functional Data Analysis (FDA) statistical framework is a rapidly growing research area and has been successfully deployed in a variety of settings. FDA treats each measured data stream as a realisation of a smooth, differentiable function, thus exploiting key properties of the data. A key first step in FDA involves smoothing to remove noise and produce a finite-dimensional representation of the data for model fitting. This project will apply such techniques to analyse the large datasets generated by the Endotronix sensor. The successful candidate will develop novel statistical methods required to fully utilise and exploit all data. The outputs from this research are applicable across all domains where sensor data are routinely obtained, increasing the impact of this project.

Job Description: 

The EU funded LEG4DEV “Legumes for Development” project (www.leg4dev.org) is a €7.2 million research project led that conducts research to enable scaling of legumes for development & sustainability outcomes in Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania and Ethiopia. The project is led by University of Galway in partnership with IITA, CIMMYT, ILRI, Wageningen University, University of Hohenheim and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences  (SLU). 

Within the AgriBiosciences, Food Security and Climate Resilience research group of Professor Charles Spillane the Research Assistant (Research Communications & Participatory Impact Officer) will work closely with Prof. Spillane and his team to engage in research communications and participatory impact activities with scaling partners and stakeholders to ensure that the research conducted enables scaling of legumes for development outcomes.

  • Engage in research and supports on communications activities, strategies, channels and modes to reach defined audiences and stakeholders of relevance to the goals of the LEG4DEV project.
  • Engage in research and supports on participatory impact approaches with scaling partners and stakeholders to maximise outcomes and impacts from the LEG4DEV project.

  • Provide input into the planining, coordination and implementation of pipeline of research project applications from Prof. Spillane’s team and collaborating partners (nationally and globally).
  • Maintain strong relationships with a portfolio of research funders and key partnerships globally, and keep up to date with trends and developments in the research and innovation funding arena.
  • Review and improve research concept notes/proposals with Prof. Spillane and other Principal Investigators through, inter alia, the development and articulation of log frames, measurable outputs, outcomes and their deliverables and indicators.
  • Engage with performance management plans for the project, including engagement in monitoring of the implementation process to track milestones and report on progress of the selected performance indicators for outputs.
  • Participate actively in project review and planning meetings and in reporting on performances and effectiveness of the project activities.
  • Contribute to publication of research results and success stories.
  • Participate in training and capacity building of research and other staff in Prof. Spillane and collaborating research groups on successful grant writing and capture. Improve proposal-writing processes by evaluating and re-designing processes for their production and submission.
  • Working with PIs and Project Managers to ensure that research project reporting meets reporting deadlines.
  • Create and curate LEG4DEV’s in-house database on research project proposals, ensuring data and information is current and accurate, and providing regular analytical reports.
  • Travel nationally and internationally to establish and maintain networks with research partners, funders and stakeholders.

Qualifications/Skills required: 

Essential Requirements:

  • Primary degree (Level 8) of relevance to international sustainable development, ideally with a focus on agrifood systems, food security and sustainability.

Project Description:

BIOMEND is a MSCA Industrial Doctorate Network programme that will provide world-class interdisciplinary training for 15 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) in the area of BIOabsorbable Metallic ENdovascular Medical Devices (BIOMEND). BIOMEND will develop next-generation bioabsorbable metals for endovascular medical devices. BIOMEND will achieve this through the development of ultra-fine grain Magnesium and Zinc alloys that exhibit high strength and high ductility, with enhanced corrosion properties delivered by multi-layer coating technologies. These novel Magnesium and Zinc metal alloys will be leveraged to develop, design and fabricate a range of innovate bioabsorbable endovascular medical devices across both cardiovascular and peripheral applications.

The BIOMEND consortium consists of a total of 18 academic, industry and clinical participants, with complementary research skills and training expertise, which spans a number of EU countries and industry sectors. In total, BIOMEND DN will recruit 15 Doctoral Candidates who will undertake 3-year PhD programmes, co-hosted by academic and non-academic members of the consortium.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be responsible, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, for leading the BIOMEND MSCA Doctoral Network, which is led by Prof. Ted Vaughan in the Biomechanics Research Centre, School of Engineering, University of Galway.

The role will involve managing both technical and administrative aspects of the BIOMEND MSCA Doctoral Network to ensure the successful delivery of the collaborative research and training programmes. The role will also contribute to the wider strategic development of the BIOMEND MSCA programme, by Identifying appropriate funding calls, supporting grant writing activities to achieve future funding and protection of intellectual property and setting out a commercialisation roadmap.

The position will be based within the Alice Perry Engineering Building at the School of Engineering in University of Galway. Successful candidates will be highly motivated and have an excellent track-record in research project management experience (minimum 4 years). Duties:

The successful candidate will:

 Job Description:

Cancer and autoimmune disorders impose massive, life-limiting burdens on a majority of the population at some point in their lives, and in their advanced stages, often remain highly resistant to conventional treatments.

HEALED is a €10.5M project that aims to change this by leveraging technologies from two leading Irish biotech companies (RemedyBio and aCGT Vector), along with deep clinical expertise in cancer and immune cell biology (TTMI) and cutting-edge genomics data science approaches (University of Galway) to develop an end-to-end data-driven approach to tumour infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy.

This project has the potential to quickly translate findings into clinical care, improving outcomes for cancer patients for whom current therapies have not been effective, as well as bringing a new generation of advanced therapeutic medicinal products (ATMPs) to the Irish and international markets.

At University of Galway, our work in HEALED involves the development of cloud-based computational pipelines and clinician interfaces for neoantigen prediction from whole-exome sequencing and associated clinical data and we are seeking to recruit two experienced bioinformatics developers/data scientists to lead this work.

Duties:

  • Conduct a specified programme of research and scholarship under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator.

The PSYCHE & VISTA Programs

These research programs will focus on improving the mental health of young people with mental health disorders, including those with more serious mental health disorders and those who use digital mental health interventions. This research seeks to improve the quality of psychosocial interventions currently available for affected young people and to understand barriers and facilitators to obtaining good care.

Mentored by the program’s PI Professor Donohoe, a professor of Psychology at the University of Galway and a clinical psychologist and HRB research leader, the research assistant/assistant psychologist will act as a liaison between clinical staff and the research team. The postholder will also undertake detailed clinical and neuropsychological assessments of patients and input data under supervision. Working as part of a team, the research assistant/assistant psychologist will have day to day supervision from a senior member of the team and participate in weekly progress meetings. All necessary training will be provided.

  • Collate data on participant engagement with mental health interventions.
  • Score assessment forms and enter results on a database.

This project will develop new AI algorithms and apply these methods to the agriculture sector in Ireland, focusing on dairy farming. Dairy farming is a very energy intensive form of farming. In order to decarbonise the dairy farming sector, it is necessary to better integrate renewable energy generation into dairy farming. This project will develop and apply AI methods to effectively integrate renewable generation into dairy farming, by combining it with recent technological developments in the energy sector. This project will investigate a range of topics relating to AI (deep learning, reinforcement learning, multi-agent systems, and agent-based modelling) and energy systems (energy modelling, renewable energy, energy management, and energy in agriculture). 

 

Job Description: 

The successful candidate will develop new AI algorithms and apply these methods to challenges relating to integrating renewable energy into dairy farming.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership, management and development of a diverse team of HPC specialists and the operational management of our service catalogue and related systems.   • Identify EU-level initiatives that would benefit the national community and putting in place the necessary awareness and when required programmes to leverage those. Examples of this include ICHEC’s Academic Flagship and Digital Innovation Flagship Programmes which successfully leveraged the EuroHPC network of National Competence Centres. 
  • Identify emerging domains that could benefit from access to the National HPC Service and be pro-active at on-boarding them. This will involve evangelising on the benefits of modern (data-centric) HPC, the definition of personalised plans for on-boarding and follow ups. 
  • Establish a close relationship with the Chairs of the Science and Users Councils. Engage fully with the Science Council to streamline access to the National HPC Service without compromising the high standards of quality; engage fully with the Users Council to develop new activities in support of the Service and establish a high quality and always on communication channels with users of the Service.  
  • Manage communications with users and other stakeholders during service outages.

The project “Adaptation and Diversity of wild honey bees in Ireland” investigates the native honey bee subspecies Apis mellifera mellifera at many locations across Ireland. Using citizen science approaches wild nest sites of the honey bee are reported and validated and monitored over time to learn about honey bee survival. How wild colonies survive despite the presence of parasites and pathogens is of interest. Also of interest is whether wild colonies show signs of adaptation to living outside of the managed apiaries, if they have been impacted by the importations of non-native bees and whether wild colonies show more native traits than traits of imported bees. 

Job Description:

The successful candidate will assist the team by processing the large numbers of samples from wild colonies gathered by the team. Techniques will largely include finding and sampling honey bee colonies, honey bee dissection, morphometric analyses, DNA extraction, PCR, and DNA sequence management. Other duties may include engagement with citizen scientists, processing data, presenting and writing.

Job Description: 

The successful candidate will support research tasks for the Vacusense project and liaise with consortium partners in University of Galway, Technological University Dublin (TUD) and MedTech firms Integer and Versono Medical Ltd. The role involves supporting other team members in testing a novel, ultrasound activated, integrated crossing-atherectomy device to treat critical limb ischaemia (CLI) patients in a minimally invasive manner with the aim of reducing pain, improving blood flow and ultimately preserving the limb. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to, organising, and delivering vascular function testing with researchers at the University of Galway. The successful candidate will be based in the Human Biology Building at University of Galway, working with Dr Leo Quinlan and Dr Brendan Higgins. 

Duties 

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting other team members in the development drug delivery system and co-ordinating, organising, managing the characterisation and formulation of prototypes for in vitro testing. The successful candidate will support research tasks for the Vacusense project and liaise with consortium partners in University of Galway, Technological University Dublin (TUD) and MedTech firms Integer and Versono Medical Ltd. The role involves testing a novel, ultrasound activated, integrated crossing-atherectomy device to treat critical limb ischaemia (CLI) patients in a minimally invasive manner with the aim of reducing pain, improving blood flow and ultimately preserving the limb. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for co-ordinating, organising, managing and delivering vascular function in health and disease activities for researchers at the University of Galway, as well as contributing to the strategic development of the laboratory’s research agenda.   • Manage and test bioreactor and isometric tension testing of human blood vessels as models of healthy and diseased vascular disease

This position is funded through a Horizon Europe EIC Pathfinder project, BIOMET4D, whose aim is to develop to create a new generation of shape-shifting and load-bearing implants for dynamic tissue restoration through the development of novel lattice-based structures. The position is available from 1st June 2024 to the 31st August 2025. 

Project Description:  

Reconstructive surgeries frequently require multiple, often complex, procedures at high social and economic costs. A shape-morphing implant that can be implanted using less invasive procedures and that then undergoes predesigned shape changes, leading to tissue expansion and allowing for complete degradation coupled with tissue regeneration, is a radically new treatment concept. BIOMET4D aims to create a new generation of shape-shifting and load-bearing implants for dynamic tissue restoration for both soft- and hard-tissue applications. This position will develop a computational optimization framework that integrates key aspects of spatial and temporal device performance (mechanical, physiochemical, and biological) in the implanted environment and thus provides a basis to systematically improve implant design through the production of functionally-graded lattice-based implants.  

This research will be conducted using the equipment, technical expertise, office and research space within the Biomechanics Research Centre in the School of Engineering at the University of Galway. The Alice Perry Engineering building houses state-of-the-art Biomedical Engineering facilities including cell culture laboratories, biomechanical testing laboratories, micro-CT scanning, microscopy, research space and computer suites.   

Job Description:  

The successful candidate will be involved in the computational design, development and verification of the 4D lattice-based medical implants under development. This role will require computational modelling expertise in the area of optimization of scaffold/lattice-based, structures for medical implant applications. The role will also predict the long-term load-bearing behavior of these devices, with mechanoregulation models being implemented to predict implant-tissue interactions and optimize proof-of-concept designs. The candidate will work closely with industrial and academic collaborators within the BIOMET4D consortium..  

Duties:  

The successful candidates will: 

  • Develop finite element models of metallic lattice-based structures to predict functional performance.  
  • Develop and implement computational optimisation algorithms to optimise the design and topology of lattice-based structures, thereby producing functionally-graded implants.  
  • Develop and implement mechanoregulation models that will consider the cellular processes that drive tissue damage, growth, and regeneration in the implant environment.

Project Description

This project develops and applies a data-driven approach in order to provide the first macro-level view of the circulation of early modern English poetry in manuscript. It focuses on English verse manuscripts written and used between the introduction of printing in England in 1475 and 1700, by which time the rapid changes in both literary taste and publishing norms ushered in by the Restoration had fully transformed literary culture. The project includes manuscripts circulating in England and anywhere else English was spoken and read, including Ireland, the North American colonies, and continental exile communities. It develops innovative computational models and quantitative methods for studying the social and material forces that informed literary culture.

 

Whereas the current state of the art has seen the scholarly community address manuscripts primarily as case studies, STEMMA seeks to open new frontiers in manuscript research by facilitating the identification of patterns and trends at scale. To that end, the project begins by synthesizing six of the most comprehensive datasets about early modern English manuscripts in preparation for advanced literary, material, and quantitative analyses. This first work package sets the stage for four further, interlocking work packages, to which the doctoral and postdoctoral positions are allocated: networking early modern manuscript poems; early modern literary communities in the English-speaking world; rolling archetypes, computational text analysis, and scholarly editing; and textual circulation between manuscript and print. The research team will comprise the PI, three postdoctoral researchers, and one PhD student with expertise in literary history, textual studies, computational text analysis, and social network analysis. They will be based in the Moore Institute for Research in the Humanities and Social Studies, located in the Hardiman Research Building.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will focus on Work Package 4, ‘Rolling Archetypes, Computational Text Analysis, and Scholarly Editing’.

This work package will test methods from textual editing and stylometry to assess their usefulness for identifying poets and/or scribes. The first several months of the contract will focus primarily on data

preparation and reconciliation. The researcher will then identify one or more previously unidentified textual ‘clusters’ and prepare a full-text corpus. The researcher will apply computational text analysis methods to investigate how compilers worked with rolling archetypes and how these insights might inform contemporary textual editing practice. The researcher will also contribute to the organization of a major international hackathon and conference and the communication of project results through peer-reviewed outputs and public outreach activities.

This is one of 3 Ph.D. positions on the PRIVI-SENSE project to reinvent today’s computational imaging as a privacy-secured method of sensing human subjects. Positions are available from Jan 2024.

This Ph.D. research topic will explore the extension of existing embedded, in-device authentication methods, based on conventional imaging, to employ methods based on multi-modal imaging data. An additional objective of this research will be to determine some unique advantages of multimodal authentication over conventional imaging and to personalize some of the sensing methods explored in the PRIVI-SENSE project. Based on our most recent research work, it is likely that this research topic will focus on the use of event-cameras combined with sparse/spiking neural network architectures for authentication and personalization. This research topic may also encompass speech analysis to enhance computer-vision based sensing and authentication. (C3I has built significant know-how on child speech analysis and synthesis in the past 3 years).

A key end goal is to advance the use of smart-sensing in support of smart-city and smart-home use cases, including home workers.

This Ph.D. research topic will explore the extension of existing physiological, emotional and cognitive sensation based on conventional imaging, to employ methods based on multi-modal (NIR, LWIR and Neuromorphic) imaging data. A key challenge here will be to better correlate these involuntary behavioural patterns of a subject with their cognitive and emotional state. A secondary objective will be to investigate the potential of multi-modal imaging to achieve physiological sensing of, for example, a subject’s pulse rate. Other behavioural patterns, e.g. eye-movements or facial tics, could be linked to underlying physiological conditions.

A key end goal is to advance the use of smart-sensing in support of the well-being of home workers and older adults at home – a field where research is growing following the broad adoption of home-working during the pandemic. Also, this research topic may encompass speech analysis to enhance computer-vision based sensing. (C3I has built significant know-how on child speech analysis and synthesis in the past 3 years). Detailed Project Description: This SFI-IRC funded PhD position aims to revolutionize knee surgery by introducing an innovative approach. Our aim is to replace invasive knee arthroplasty with an injectable shape memory scaffold. This scaffold, loaded with a pain-relieving therapeutic agent, can withstand joint forces and halt cartilage degeneration while providing relief from chronic pain of osteoarthritis.

Our project addresses the major hurdles in the treatment of OA:

  • Development of an injectable cryogel scaffold with shape memory properties to support and preserve joints affected by OA.
  • Development of a minimally invasive delivery strategy for the shape memory scaffold for long-term preservation of the knee joint, bypassing invasive surgery.

Detailed Project Description

Centrosomes are the principal microtubule organising centres in animal somatic cells. They assemble the poles of the mitotic spindle, regulate cell polarity and movement, and form the base of primary cilia. Changes in the number of centrosomes and in centrosome stability are frequently seen in cancer or in senescent cells. Such changes can cause significant problems in mitosis and cause cell death or aneuploidy. This PhD project will explore how key centrosome structures are assembled and the molecular details of how they function after DNA damage and replicative senescence. Centrosomes are composed of one or two microtubule-based centrioles within a cloud of pericentriolar material. We will use reverse genetics and expansion microscopy to explore how key centriolar protein complexes ensure centriolar integrity and cohesion during the cell cycle and after genotoxic stress or cellular senescence.

Detailed Project Description:

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Jason Harold (University of Galway) and Dr. Niall Farrell (ESRI), and join a team of energy economists and behavioural scientists from the University of Galway, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) Energy Policy Research Centre, and the ESRI’s Behavioural Research Unit on a project entitled Maximising the Flexibility of Energy Consumption in Ireland (FlexECon). The project will explore aspects of energy consumption and behaviour by leveraging data provided by an energy supplier to identify the extent with which consumers respond to time-of-use pricing, informational signals and their combination. New informational incentives will be examined alongside Time of Use (ToU) tariffs in monitoring and field experiments. In addition, quasi-experimental methods will be employed to identify the effects of separate stimuli on energy consumption as well as the instruments that maximise price responsiveness.

Living allowance (Stipend):

The project is funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). The PhD stipend is €25,000 per annum and is tenable for 4 years. The stipend is usually a tax-exempt scholarship award.

University fees:

The funding will also cover University fees up to a maximum of €5,750 per annum and is also tenable for 4 years.

Start date: September 2024

Academic Entry Requirements: The candidate should be highly self-motivated with an ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong quantitative skills and good communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential requirements. Detailed Project Description: The BEVENT project, funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), is an interdisciplinary research project designed to provide insight into the factors that influence how occupants interact with ventilation systems in energy efficient homes in Ireland. The objective of the project is to design, implement and evaluate a behavioural intervention programme to improve the level of awareness regarding indoor air quality, and to promote positive engagement with building ventilation systems.

The PhD student will be required to perform field work related to Indoor Air Quality sampling, the design and execution of a questionnaire survey and a behavioural intervention study, and they will also work on project data analysis. The field work will involve travelling to different locations around Ireland to measure indoor air pollutants (IAPs) in energy efficient homes. The successful candidate will join an active multidisciplinary project team and gain expertise in indoor air quality, exposure science, ventilation, health psychology, and environmental health. The collaborative project will include various work packages led by staff with expertise in exposure science and psychology. The research project also involves a collaboration with  Leeds Sustainable Institute at Leeds Beckett University in the UK.
