The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of International Affairs (IA), in collaboration with the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), is seeking a highly motivated candidate for an Energy Markets Data Fellowship. This opportunity is ideal for individuals interested in contributing to U.S. international energy policy through rigorous data analysis and market research.
The selected fellow will collaborate with IA staff to support the Department’s international energy engagement by collecting, organizing, and synthesizing data on global energy markets. The fellow’s participation on this project will inform high-level policy discussions, strategic briefings, and collaboration with international partners.
What will I be doing?
Learning Objectives
Through this fellowship, the participant will:
- Gain knowledge of federal energy policy development and international affairs.
- Learn how to identify, collect, and analyze global energy market data from international and domestic sources.
- Contribute to U.S. energy engagements by providing timely and accurate market intelligence to inform DOE leadership and interagency efforts.
- Collaborate with experts across DOE, U.S. government agencies, and international institutions.
Key Activities
The fellow may participate in the following activities:
- Compile and clean datasets from diverse sources, including the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), International Energy Agency (IEA), OPEC, Energy Institute Statistical Review, national governments, and market intelligence platforms.
- Analyze global energy trends in areas such as oil and gas, electricity, renewables, energy trade, and pricing.
- Develop charts, graphics, and briefings that communicate complex data clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Participate in preparing policy briefs, reports, and presentations for DOE leadership and interagency stakeholders.
- Learn about IA’s engagement in international forums, bilateral dialogues, and strategic initiatives with data-driven insights.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., economics, energy studies, public policy, international relations, data science).
- Strong data analysis skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Excel and data visualization.
- Interest in global energy systems, policy, or market dynamics.
- U.S. citizenship.
